7 ways to avoid blocks when collecting public web data

Good IPs are only half of the story. This checklist covers the request habits that keep your success rate high.

Even the best residential IPs get blocked if the traffic behind them looks automated. Use this checklist before you scale a new scraper.

The checklist

  1. Respect the site. Read robots.txt and the terms of service, and only collect public data.
  2. Slow down. Add random delays between requests to the same domain.
  3. Rotate IPs and headers together. A new IP with the same fingerprint is still the same visitor.
  4. Use sticky sessions for multi-step flows such as search → product page.
  5. Match the location. Use proxies in the same country as the content you request.
  6. Handle errors gracefully. Back off on 429 and 403 responses instead of retrying instantly.
  7. Monitor your success rate in the dashboard and switch networks when it drops.
